Understanding the Benefits of Participatory Research for Public Health

When: November 7, 2013
Time: 3:00 pm

Participatory Research (PR) is the co-construction of research through partnerships between researchers and people affected by, and/or responsible for action on, issues under study. PR is not a method, but rather a research approach, in which multi-stakeholder partnerships plan and implement quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research to generate health program and policy interventions, products, and knowledge. We conducted a realist review of the PR literature, and followed up with qualitative interviews, to better understand the extent and quality of outcomes that arise when academic and community stakeholders converge to co-construct community health intervention research.

This presentation will provide background information about what participatory research is and will report on the findings of our realist review of the benefits and challenges of the approach.
